In the modern world of tattooing, there has been an increase in demand for faith and religion themed body art images, however one of the most classic designs is still a firm favorite today and this is of course a Madonna tattoo.
Traditionally these feature images depicting the Virgin Mary and baby Jesus and these were one of the earliest tattoo designs, thanks to their popularity among sailors over a hundred and fifty years ago. Today this design remains popular either in its original “Old School” style but there are also designs that give a modern take to this centuries old image.
As one of the oldest and fundamental symbols of Christianity, the Madonna and Child symbolizes the necessity of remaining virtue however it has also become a big part of Latin and cholo culture, which in turn was heavily influenced by the Catholic Church. The term cholo is a slang Hispanic term for those of mixed race, particularly those children born of a Black male and an Indian female, or vice versa. This may explain why some versions of the Madonna and child feature the Virgin Mary and her baby Jesus, with a dark skinned mother or baby. When it comes to body art, a Madonna tattoo looks best as a medium to large design where the tattoo artist can really do justice to the imagery used to create a miniature work of art to rival medieval paintings of this nature.
The original Madonna and Child artwork was from a wood panel painting from the Italian Renaissance period of the early 14th century however this pairing has been emulated by many masters since. From Botticelli and Da Vinci to Michelangelo and Salvador Dali, the Madonna has been immortalized in paintings and sculptures for centuries and many of these depictions have also been used for body art designs too. The symbolism behind the Madonna tattoo goes far beyond the religious connotations and does more than represent the bond between mother and child too. The Madonna herself is generally inked on the skin wearing blue to signify truth and hope but she is often accompanied by angels in many depictions to represent her link with both the celestial and earthly realms. This is a very beautiful image that makes a striking body art design especially when inked on a larger canvas of skin like the back where it can be displayed in its full glory thanks to the artistic talent of an experience and skilled tattoo artist.
